Handbag Envy

September 3rd, 2007

Christi has a friend who is considering selling handmade bags and purses, and sent one of the early samples to her to test drive. It’s a pretty damned cool bag, and it’s been driving me nuts for at least a week. I have handbag envy, and I’ve spent much of the weekend searching for a new bag.

My current collection:

  • My beloved sorceror’s bag from Kambriel, though mine isn’t exactly as pictured (it’s a fabric they don’t make any more: black velvet with a glittery purple backing, now more purple than black because the thing has survived at least eight years of pretty heavy-duty use and, like all aging velvet, it’s developed a few balding patches).
  • A battered messenger bag I got for free at last year’s annual meeting. It has our association logo on it, and holds quite a lot of stuff; unfortunately, the lining is splitting and it’s looking a little pathetic. Possibly it’s time to retire this one from active handbag duty and into shopping bag rotation.
  • A very hippie-esque crocheted purse from the 1970s, which used to be my mom’s, I think. It’s all fringed and actually pretty cool, but it’s white and kind of small, and it closes with a flap that folds over, so it’s not terribly secure. I used it when I was in college, but I tended to lose things pretty regularly. Kept mostly as a memento these days.
  • Several spiky velvet backpacks, which have largely disintegrated from use and are in need of some serious mending, if not being consigned to the scrap bag.
  • I think it is not too overindulgent to have two working handbags that aren’t falling apart and that don’t leave a trail of my stuff everywhere I go. Still, not a purchase to be made precipitously, not if it’s going to be competing with Christi’s bag.

So far, the coolest one I’ve found that actually fits my personality is the Vivien (named after Vivien Leigh, not Vivian from “The Young Ones,” but I suppose that’s all right, too) here, second one down the page. I like it, but I can’t help but wonder whether I should get something a bit more colorful . . .

. . . such as, perhaps, one of these man bags?

Heh. Those man bags are great.

I’m flattered you are excited enough about my bag to spend the weekend trying to find a cool one for yourself — and I’m sure Kate would be too. I definitely like it. :)

I think the Vivien is a darn cool bag.
