It astonishes me that Canada still allows the annual baby seal hunt (335,000 this year). Please consider signing this petition asking the PM for a ban. (For a more neutral background source, see http://www.cbc.ca/news/background/sealhunt/.)

While you’re at it, maybe urge the U.S. government to protect polar bear habitat in addition to protecting the bears themselves?

Another interesting perspective — and, of course, there are so many factors involved that it is difficult to demonstrate beyond all doubt that correlation does, in this case, involve causation as well. Personally, I prefer to take the cautious and/or optimistic stance: to put it in its most simplistic but somewhat wordy form, something bad seems to be happening, there seems to be something we can do to moderate what’s happening, and it just seems better to take what steps seem to be appropriate — even if they later turn out to be unnecessary — because I’d rather have tried to help when things would’ve turned out okay anyway regardless, than not tried and then found out later I could’ve prevented or lessened the problem.
That’s rather hard to fit on a bumper sticker, though. :)
