New Spam Filter
My comment spam load is, I’m sure, nowhere nearly as bad as it is for lots of people, but lately it’s been getting worse, and my blacklist doesn’t seem to work terribly well for the current generation of gibberish stories with links randomly embedded. Thus, in the hope of saving myself from the nuisance of having to moderate gibberish spam several times a day, I’ve just added Spam Karma 2.
If this should cause untoward inconvenience or nuisance to legitimate commenters, please let me know: [my domain name, up to but not including the dot], care of Sir Yahoo of the House of dotCom should work. (Sorry for the unclickability, and for the lack of a “Contact” link in my header; I have as yet not taken the time to investigate how to make these easy for users but inconvenient to spammers, beyond the old “take out the ‘trash’” approach. Mea culpa. Mea maxima lazy.)

Wow, that was fast. I hope Spam Karma works as advertised.
Bloglines’ e-mail subscriptions may be a good way to have your contact info on your blog. You can throw the address away if spammers catch on.

I’d just finished installing the plugin yesterday when you e-mailed. I’m keeping my fingers crossed about its effectiveness.
I hadn’t thought about using Bloglines for my contact info; that seems like a good idea, though it does kind of leave non-Bloglinesers out in the cold. I should do some more investigation.
Update: It looks as if SK2 did snag an instance of gibberish spam that came in about 4:30 this morning. Yay! (I like the fact that things marked as spam are held instead of deleted, so you can review them yourself, but that you’re not nagged to do so with e-mail requests to moderate.) So far, there’s no interference with legitimate comments, but you’re probably the most frequent commenter besides me, Sarah. I don’t want to block occasional comments from random surfers — such as the kind stranger who directed me to Wikipedia after my search for a poppadom recipe failed miserably. Fingers still crossed.

To non-Bloglinesers the subscription address is the same as any other e-mail address. I use a Bloglines address for my Yahoo groups. It’s just that the e-mail shows up in your Bloglines instead of your yahoo/gmail account. Or am I misinterpreting something?
Hooray for SK2!
