(*&(*#$&#&! WordPress v. 2!

April 22nd, 2006

I cannot freakin’ believe how obstreperous page layout is in WordPress 2! I type everything in, click “Save and Continue Editing” to check the layout, make fixes, click S&CE again, and things I did not touch at all have changed!

I hate this. If I could go back to version 1.5 or whatever I had before, I would. Grrr. I hate that it tries to second-guess me, and autoformats things and is just generally too fussy. It used to be reliable but not very swanky; now it’s trying to be all Microsoft Word and do everything for you — and, like Microsoft Word, it gets it wrong about half the time, and screws new things up while you’re fixing the things it screwed up last time. Why the hell does it mess with hard returns like that? What did they do to screw up what used to be really good software?

Ah, screw it. My site host offers some other blogging software, I think; I may have to check out the other options. [Insert string of expletives of your choice here.]

Uncheck “Users should use the visual rich editor by default” under Options–>Writing.

That should fix the problem. That turns off the autoformatting thingy and returns the interface back to the usual one.

Also, I wish our humble employer would let us use Open Office. I despise what MS did to Word.

Thanks. I’ve unchecked the box; with any luck, that should keep me from wanting to kick in the sides of my computer chassis. Thanks! :D

MS in general has always gotten up my nose. (Of course, I still use Windows, wimp that I am.) If they’d let us use OO, I’d be happy — but I’m grateful that at least they let us use Firefox, and we don’t have to ask permission before installing FF extensions. Otherwise, I’d have lost even more sanity than I have already.

Scrapbook is my favoritest extension right now. I learned about it on LH. I’ve used it for price comparisons by clipping the info off the pages I want and putting it all into a folder (in this case called Mugen Batteries). This way I don’t have to bookmark five different pages. Also, the scrapbooked info will take me to the original URL.

I’ve also scrapbooked some lists (e.g., the correct order to read the Anita Blake books).

I love scrapbook because it is so easy to label and find things. I’m going to start using it for LH-type things instead of keeping them in Bloglines.

I also like not having to bookmark pages when I only want to keep a small amount of info.

I like Scrapbook too; I mainly use it for political bookmarking, research for work, or other things that might be likely to be ephemeral but you still need to archive.

I also like Update Notifier, but when I catch its icon out of the corner of my eye, it tends to look more like a skull than a tree, for some reason. Maybe because it’s so tiny.

I backed up my Firefox yesterday. I’ve heard that you can have incompatible extensions and then must start all over reinstalling extensions. I do think this is a rare occurrence.
